8 December 1935 Dear Toots We would have been down today only we didnot know it was going to be nice out until it was too late. It still isnt nice out but it is warm and therefore will not freeze and therefore is nice out. The reason it is warm out is because I bought a new overcoat yesterday. It is very very. A week ago yesterday I started to take Ethel Harris out, and since then (exactly one week) I have had some ten dates with her. She is perfectly adorable and I am of course quite wobbly about her. Last night I took her to the students' performance of withinthesewalls. Jim and LiLa and JSanner and Elaine Engel were also withus. Result: there were exactly 3 girls in the whole auditorium in the midst of some 3 or 400 fellows and jiggers. It was great sport; you can imagine the sensation it created. Ethel is really a very good influence upon me: I am not a total abstainer (and I'm not kidding you) and I am even considering giving up smoking, although this is doubtful at the moment. Please however do not get the idea that I am going steady with her or anything like that: I probably never will or at least not for years. The books you sent up are perfectly perfectly quite too utterly marvelous. I had no idea they would be so nice. I will probably be in Iowa City next Sunday with the play and I will also go down for you on Wed. the 18 if the day is not too terrible. In that case I guess you will be forced to use the bus but I think I will be down. Please do not mention all the things I have been saying about Ethel etc because I've already had some jolly little arguments with Daddy on the subject of women of which he does not approve in any way shape or form. goodbye love Jody
