4 I met Mrs. Kiel's (my landlady) daughter the other day. She is a composer, won the only prize ($1000) in a nation-wide contest a few years ago which I think 30,000 musicians entered. She is 27, just married a couple of months. She also won every prize in French in California and the nation, so that finally she was no longer allowed to compete. She and her husband are both very deep students - the predominating piece of furniture in their apartment seems to be an enormous dictionary. Among their books I noted Pascal's Pensees, The Magic Mountain and many others. While I was down there I read some of her French papers, some of them published in San Francisco
