Wednesday night 4/4/40 Dear Dad and Mary - I have just returned from Mrs. Aurner's very stimulating seminar in Middle English. As usual, the discussion following the actual classwork was the most enjoyable part of it, although translating the Pearl is interesting despite its difficulties. Thank you very much for the letter and the money. I am continuing the swimming - I go in every day, and last Saturday afternoon I not only swam but also boxed and worked out on a rowing-machine and punched a punching bag - all of which affords a welcome relief from purely intellectual and academic problems. At present I am busy preparing a lecture on the Italian Element in English language for Dr. McGalliard's class. I was given the assignment because apparently I was the only one in the class who had studied Italian. Also, I have just finished a paper on Carlyle for Nineteenth Century Literature, and presently I must start preparing some more of [Trailus?]
