Tuesday 12/7/40 Dear Dad and Mary - I hope you do not think my plan to go to Boston for Christmas is crazy. The idea developed very suddenly, and hence I did not think there would be time to write to you and receive a reply before I left. I shall miss not being home for Christmas, but on the other hand I do not know when I would have another opportunity to go to Boston so inexpensively since there will not be people driving there to MLA conferences every year. I am anxious to attend as many meetings as possible, and I am supposed to report to both Pitcher and Forester on what I do attend. I wish also to meet I.A. Richards and examine the Institute of Basic English at Harvard. Beyond all this, of course, I feel strongly the need for a change of scene and a relief from academic pressure. Thank you very much for the check and letter - I had no difficulty cashing this check since the bank had already received a letter from your bank. I am very glad to hear that you are still peddling the [bank?], Mary Ellen - Schramm asked me about it just the other day - suggested that the publication of Helene's
