Columbia College LORAS HALL Dubuque, Iowa Thursday evening 4 September 1941 Dear Mary Ellen - Well - I (we) am (are) glad to hear, indirectly since you haven't written to me, that you arrived - which is of course not nearly so remarkable as the fact that you have left. Anyway, just don't get silly and sentimental about home and all that. Father is very well and in, for him, excellent spirits. Also, now that you have left, you are his pride & joy, chiefly, it appears, because you are a true American (i.e., not Alien-Minded like his two sons). However, I am getting along with him fine for the most part (it was F.H. who precipitated the politics). I came back to Dubuque last Saturday afternoon after a busy and profitable week in Iowa City - we found a beautifully-furnished, newly decorated suite with private bath - not expensive either; also got Mrs. Conrad established. Anyway, as you many have inferred, F.H. was in town Labor Day week-end; he and father & I went to dinner Sunday night - highballs at the Circle (Scotch & soda while waiting for the super-super steaks) - beer with the steaks, then coffee and green Chartreuse and then more coffee and finally
