through the town. there are a great many steam mills here, which I cant account for when there is so much water. It seems that wood is cheaper than water. the streets are full of sawdust and chips. But the country being so level, I dont think that water can get head enough to make the force that steam can, and wood being very plenty, this is the reason I think that they have steam instead of water. It is a styleish place the folks dress with as much style as in any Eastern place, but it is a common thing in all western towns to imitate New York City as near as they can.
