On saturday the 29th of June I took the Oath of alleigeance to Uncle sam for three years, It was administered to us by Capt. McIntyre of the U.S. Army. There were five men that refused to take it, the Col. took them from the ranks and shaved their heads and then drummed them out of camp, they looked sheepish enough, I dont hardly think it right, yet it was needed as an example to the rest. When men enlist and live on the State for weeks & receive money and other things from their neighbors to support their families and then back down, one can hardly pity them, It is hard to look on humanity when degraded in public, one cant but help showing some pity for them be they
