The lateral walls are also perforated in restricted areas. called sieve discs, and through these perforations and those in the horizontal walls the protoplasmic contents of the contiguous cells freely unite. Plate V [underlined] fig. a. [/underlined] shows the sieve tissue which occurs in the phloem portion of the bundle associated with the companion, and bast-parenchyma cells which make up the soft bast.
