6. This process we term conjugation. Here it is manifestly impossible at the outset to predict in which filament the spore will eventually appear, or be found - one cell is to all appearance exactly like its mate : yet at length one fertilizes the other. Probably the passing cell must be considered the active, the unmoved cell the passive, and the latter cell may be said to be fertilized.
