7. by the former. The connection between the filaments, having no farther use, becomes severed (Pl. II fig 2-c.) and the old empty cell walls of the fertilizing filament are dead. The masses of protoplasm begin to change: a wall is formed about each, they begin to contract, and become round: the projection which united them with the fertilizing cells begins to grow smaller
