17. is called a sclerotium. A section through this shows stiff ascogenous hyphal, ramifying the tissue in every direction. The cells of this enclosing tissue diminish in size as they approach the edge, where we find from 2 to 4 layers of cells, of a yellowish brown color. This is known as the resting condition and if kept dry they will remain for a short time without losing their power of germination.
