When thus planted their corn does very well; while if they planted it the same depth that Iowa farmers plant theirs, it probably would not sprout on account of drought. The seasons are that the country is without rain and almost without dew, and in summer the sandy soil is continuously parched by the sun at temperature often exceeding 38 [degree sign] C. in the shade. It is only at the depth of a foot or more that the seed finds the moisture needful for its growth - moisture furnished by the melting of the winter's snow.
