in my funny little blue terra cotta stove. So with the fire burning merrily I sat down to write to my mother, intending to follow with a long letter to you about my scouting trip through the Vosges. I had just got well started telling her how today recalled to me last Fourth of July and the one preceding, the first day I ever spent in Paris, when there came a rat-a-tat-tat at my door and the clerk on duty called me to come to the office. There I found a Mr. Adamson, correspondent of the Paris Matin. Of his coming I had received no warning. Mangan was asleep, and no one else being about, I saw my plan for a lovely afternoon
