hard facts do not seem to justify such a hope, but life would be sad indeed if everything worked out according to the signs.  Certainly, however, the situation is the most satisfactory it has been in months. The Italian victory and the great growth in the strength of the A.E.F. have cheered everybody.  Daily now the next Boche drive is expected.  It may be the last.  It may be checked so severely that even the servile spirit of the Fritzie will rebel against Russian madness and refuse to aid it longer. That would be great good fortune because it would make possible the interior reconstruction of the German people without which our present efforts will be of little value to future generations.
You say again that you like my letters and try to make yourself out as inexpressible in comparison. It's no use trying to flatter me that way, old dear. I can't allow that statement of your being unable
