when the things came home, she raised Cain. The next Monday, in spite of anything we could say, she insisted that we do the washing. If it had been only hers and mine, we could have done it easily, but Flo raked out things she's been saving for a century, not daring to trust them to her laundress. And all that, combined with the ungodly bunch of things for the kids -- we began at five o'clock, and we were just nicely finished at noon. We all worked like fools and my hands were one big blister when we finished. And to add a touch of comedy to the situation, Mama and Flo had a water fight out on the back porch. Flo picked Mama up and put her in a tub of water, and of course, being unused to the climate up here, Mama promptly took a bad cold. I don't believe we'll do the washing next week. I can hear a Dick-cissel out in the apple tree. I miss the birds
