were and at once said we would take the place. Before visiting it we had called on a delightful French general and learned from him that the difficulties previously in the way had vanished. It is probable that we shall move in a few days. For the time being two or three officers and an orderly will have the whole big house. We are to look after visitors there as well as the correspondents. There will be only one feature lacking to make the house a place of great charm and that feature is a hostess. Will you accept the job? As I write I can hear very plainly every few seconds the boom of a gun. Unusual atmospheric conditions are letting us in on the "daily hate" noise of our quiet front. If we were back of the battle area we should be hearing a continuous roar. It appears that the advance of the Franco-American troops has been stopped, but theirs is a big Victory just the same. Very enjoyable indeed are the reports of how Americans have occupied many villages hastily evacuated by the Germans. I suppose it is too much to hope that this episode has so disheartened the Germans that they will never again be able to win a fight. But it has helped toward that state anyway. Surely by the time this letter reaches you you will have met the Reynoldses. I can hardly wait patiently for the letters that will tell me of your visit with them. I wonder
