have taken years to make it, for it is plainly the product of handwork. Of bric-a-brac I have a large supply covering one table, the mantel-piece, and four shelves of a wall cabinet. All of it is of the useless, ordinary sort that bourgeois homes in France are always filled with. I don't care for such knick-knacks, but I'd like to carry off the embroidered things. Of pictures of the Virgin I have two, plus a plaster statue, and there is a Christs picture and two Christs crucifixes. If the Catholic God will have anything to do with a Methodist I ought to be well looked after here. Besides Lieutenant Hartzell I have a French lieutenant as a fellow locataire. The family consists of the madame and a rather weak looking girl of somewhere in the twenties. Both are exceedingly cordial to us and more intelligent than the folks I have known in
