as keen about figuring out our language as we are about theirs. The daughter knows a little English. She can say "Yes" and "Good morning," and several other things. Hartzell and I have arranged to get our breakfasts here. We furnish the food and the maid does the preparation act. It's to be the French breakfast: chocolate, bread, and jam, with oatmeal in addition if the folks here can solve the mysteries of cooking it. We brought a can from the American commissary. It has directions in French on it, but they omit information as to how much of the raw material should be put in the pot for each person. I guessed it at two tablespoons; we'll see how that comes out. I am rather enjoying life in this town. Between spells of brief, intense work I have considerable leisure. Afternoons I'm leaving the orderly in the office to listen for telephone calls and entertaining myself as I will, which the chief is perfectly willing
