JANUARY January 11, 1969 On Saturday, January 11, 1969 at Eagles Danceland, Davenport, Iowa a Rally and Dance was held in support of the United Farm Worker Organizing Committee U.F.W.O.C. have been trying to gain union recognition from the grape growers in California. The goals of the strike are a written agreement for a decent living wage and an end to degrading working conditions. The grape growers have responded to these demands by refusing to negotiate with the United Farm Workers Union. The grape growers imported so many "Green Carders" and "illegal workers" from the Mexican border that the Farm Workers Union was forced to resort to a national boycott on all table grapes from California. The response has been tremendous all over the United States in support of the Grape Boycott. Presently, opposing the grape boycott are the Farm Bureau, John Birch Society and Right to Work Committee. All this controversy could be settled if the grape growers would agree to an honest election of the farm workers in California to see if they want a union. However, the grape growers refuse this by saying that the farm workers are happy with things the way they are and that they don't want a union. At a Rally on January 11, 1969 Antonio Orendain, Treasurer of the U.F.W.O.C. from Delano, California was the main speaker. LULAC Council #10 initiated a Quad-City Boycott on Grapes. John Terronez was appointed Chairman, and Ernest Rodriguez was appointed co-chairman. Definite committments of support came from Quad-City Federation of Labor, NAACP, U.A.W. Citizenship Council of the Quad-Cities, Quad-City Council on Human Relations, Moline, Ill., LULAC Council, Catholic Inter-Racial Council, Illinois Migrant Council of Churches and many others too numerous to mention here. We in Iowa LULAC are committed to the cause of the Farm Workers in Delano, California. At our State Convention at Ft. Madison, such a resolution was approved by the LULAC Iowa State Assembly. With this in mind, LULAC Council #10, Davenport, Iowa, has therefore set up the Quad-City Boycott of Grapes Committee. For further information as to what you can do to help, write to Iowa LULAC State Director. DON'T BUY GRAPES! VIVA LA CAUSA!VIVA LA HUELGA! BOYCOTT GRAPES! STATE DIRECTOR'S NOTES Iowa Supreme Council Meeting to be held in February has been postponed indefinitely because of the Nat. Supreme Council Meeting in Joliet. Also, because Nat. LULAC Week will be observed February 16 - 22, 1969, and each active council in Iowa has to have a fund raising event (dance, dinner, or something) of which the profits to go to National Office, as per resolution at 1968 Convention. Iowa to host Midwest Conference in spring of 1969. Tentative plans for conference to be held in Davenport in April if possible. Details to follow. (2)
