LULAC GLANCES LULAC COUNCIL #10, DAVENPORT, WILL PARTICIPATE IN BETTENDORF INTERNATIONAL FOLK FESTIVAL ON JUNE 14 - 15, Henry Vargas reports that Council #10 will have entries in the parade, Mexican Food, Display Mexican Arts and Crafts. Vargas stated that emphasis will be stressed on our Mexican Aztec and Indian Culture. Chairman for the Folk Festival Committee is Linda Lopez and on her committee are the following people: Mrs. Terri Vasquez, Mrs. Humberto Jiminez, Aurora Hernandez, Mrs. Ray Rangel, Joan Lopez, Mrs. Henry Vargas, Juanita Faust and Mrs. John Terronez. Additional support and help from other Mexican Americans who are not LULAC'S has also been disclosed. The Womens Division of LULAC #10 are to be commended for undertaking this project. This, of course, means that half of Council #10 will go to the State Convention and the other half will participate in the Folk Festival. Council #10 was also host to a highly successful LULAC MIDWEST CONFERENCE held on April 12, 1969. On May 10, 1969 they actively participated as "pickets" and carried signs for the Quad City Grape Boycott Committee. May 10 was designated as "International Grape Boycott Day." Council #10 also held their election of officers for 1969-70 and the results were: President elect was Humberto Jiminez, Vice President -- Ray Rangel, Secretary-Linda Lopez, Treasurer -- Salvador Lopez and Sgt. at Arms -- John Vasquez. NARCISCA ESPINOSA, NATIONAL VICE-PRESIDENT, MAIN SPEAKER AT LULAC MIDWEST CONFERENCE HELD IN DAVENPORT ON APRIL 12, 1969 AT HOTEL BLACKHAWK. Other guests and speakers were: Davenport Mayor John Jebens, Davenport Postmaster Rolla Chalupa, Gil Florence of Operation SER, State Representative John Tascott, Former Congressman John Schmidhauser and Robert Newton who is a State Representative from Scott County. State Directors and Delegates from Iowa, Illinois and Indiana were also present as was Assistant National Director of Civil Rights for LULAC, Douglas Clark. Midwest Conference went on record in support of Heinz Boycott. Also agreed to have only one Midwest Conference in 1970. Site for Conference to be determined by new State Directors at the National Convention to be held at Long Beach, California on June 25 - 30, 1969. ANNUAL MEXICAN BOWLING TOURNAMENT A HUGE SUCCESS: FORT MADISON TO HOST 1970 TOURNAMENT,. Jesse Rameriz, Chairman, stated that over twenty bowling teams competed this year, with bowlers coming from as far away as Council Bluffs, Iowa. Chairman Ramirez and his staff of Henry Vargas, Florence Castel, Al Castel and Sam Vasquez are to be commended for a fine job. WASHINGTON, D.C. OFFICIAL VISITS IOWA TO INVESTIGATE HEINZE BOYCOTT Rauel Yzaguirre, LULAC Deputy State Director of Washingtonm D.C. was in Iowa recently to investigate and report back to the LULAC National Office the role that LULAC in Iowa has in the Heinz Boycott. Yzaguirre conferred with State Director Terronez and Henry Vargas, Rudy Avila, Vince Bejarno and people in Muscatine about the Heinz Boycott. It seems that Heinz has an agreement with the LULAC National Office, but it only pertains to Indiana. Further information on this will be forthcoming at the State Convention on June 14 in Des Moines. **I have been asked to announce by the Washington, D.C. LULAC Council that Brother Jim Silva will be a candidate for National President of LULAC. They ask for our support at the National Convention which will be held June 25 through 29 at Long Beach, California. MEXICAN AMERICANS BACK UP WORDS WITH ACTION!!! The Quad-City Grape Boycott Committee went into action on International Grape Boycott Day which was May 10, 1969. The Grape Boycott Committee is the committee that was initiated by LULAC Council #10 of Davenport, and since has grown to include many civic and religious organizations in the Quad Cities, and in Iowa and Illinois.
