LULAC GLANCES saw 'la raza' come into its own feeling of 'solidarity' as it roamed the Illinois and Iowa sides of the Quad-Cities by making 'visits' with delegations of Mexican Americans to the local Grocery Markets. "Picket Lines" were put up at Murray's Super Valu Store by the " Huelga Committee" that was headed by Henry Vargas in Iowa and Ray Herrera in Illinois. Murray's Super Valu was picketed because it had allegedly been selling California "Scab" grapes. Although no picketing was done on the Illinois side the "roving delegation" was very effective in bringing the public's attention to the Grape Boycott. Organizations that participated on International Boycott day were: LULAC, Quad-City Federation of Labor AFL-CIO, UAW 1309 and 377, a representative from Davenport Chapter of NAACP St. Ambrose College Students, C.I.C. of Rock Island, Illinois and of course interested and concerned Mexican American citizens of the Quad-Cities. If there ever was a demonstration of " Brown Power" then, this was it and this is just the start of it !!!! Recently, the Farm Bureau came out with a legislative proposal to include the Far Worker by the Federal Government. So you see the Boycott is effective and now even the " super lobbyist" of them all realizes that the Farm Worker should be protected by the Government. The proposal by the Farm Bureau, however, would in effect destroy the Farm Workers Union (UFWOC) in its infancy because it would outlaw its only effective weapon, the Boycott. It would also put the Farm Worker under the Department of Agriculture and not the National Labor Relations Board. As the National Farmers Organization (N.F.O) said. Putting the Farm Worker under the Department of Agriculture as the Farmer is now, will get him the same thing the farm has gotten - " nothing." MESSAGE FROM STATE DIRECTOR OF IOWA LULAC ...... This past year has been a most rewarding and productive year for me. As my term of office nears the end. I wish to thank the many people in LULAC, and also those who do not belong to LULAC, for the help you have given me. Without your help and cooperation many of the accomplishments we achieved would not have been possible. The positive actions we have taken this past year have left us, who participated actively, with a feeling of satisfaction, contentment, and accomplishment. But best of all it gave us a feeling of "solidarity". For those of you who chose to watch from the sidelines you can only wonder in " proud confusement" and bewilderment as to how that feeling of "solidarity" would feel if you acted instead of watching and criticizing. If we fail to dare if we do not try, the next generation will harvest the fruit of our apathy -- a world we did not want - a world we did not choose-- will harvest the fruit of our apathy -- a world we did not want -- a world we did not choose -- but a world we could have made better, by caring more for the results of labors. And you will say " This is not what I meant at all. This is not it at all. I know that you did not mean to leave this kind of world to your children. But if you do not care, then who will?????????? I would like to close with my interpretation of a phrase that is currently popular at this time and it goes like this: " YES VIRGINIA, THERE IS AN ETHNIC MINORITY GROUP CALLED MEXICAN AMERICANS, BUT DON'T TELL ANYONE ELSE BECAUSE IT'S THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN THE COUNTRY. BESIDES, THEY ARE HAPPY WITH THINGS, ONE'S NEVER COMPLAINED TO ME YET, AND WHY SHOULD THEY? THEY MAKE GOOD MONEY IN THE FOUNDRIES AND FACTORIES." (3)
