Mrs. Mary Terronez; 8-15-18; Announcement CH---08 1950 - St. Ambrose College were instrumental in meeting the needs of relocation. The white (anglo-Saxon) community did not want Mexican people moving into their neighborhoods and felt the relocated people would be infiltrating their areas. I was asked by Mr. Toney and Monsignor Menke to represent the Cooks Point people and make a public appeal for relocation help by appearing on television. Approx. 6 hours per week. Approximately 175 hours were still volunteer hours in which I helped parents get their children enrolled at different schools, interpreted for people at schools, doctor’s office and other health/welfare agencies. Approximately 3 hrs. per week. 1955 - 1975 I have belonged to numerous community organizations, among them: The Hispanic American Club, 1955-58, assisting in providing a forum for civil rights activity - 60 hours; Guadalupana Society, 1958-69, meetings - church activities - 60 hours; The League of United Latin American Citizens LULAC - involvement in bettering the life of the Mexican-American, fund raising, 1955-75, 1200 hours; Quad-city Grape Boycott Committee, 1966, acted as a liason between church, unions and other organizations - 40 hours; 1970 to present, member of the Mexican-American Committee on Education, Davenport, Iowa, meetings, writing letters, reviewing educational material - 80 hours. 1973-74, served on Mayor Kirschbaum’s study of nursing home conditions - 108 hours. The study has been used for local as well as state documentation. 1973-74, AResource person for Upward Bound - 10 hours.
