3 north called Aztlan [accent over second 'a']. There is evidence pointing to the fact that this land might well have been the western or southwestern part of the present day U.S. It is said that the Shoshone Indian [sic] of the west speaks a language which is Nahuatl in origin. The Aztecs worshipped [sic] a god called Huitzilophchtli who told them to leave their land of Aztlan [accent over second 'a'] and to travel south to a place which he had promised them as a chosen people. He told them that they would know when they would arrive to this promised land when they saw an Eagle perched on a nopal (cactus plant) with a snake in its beak. Today this is a symbol which is seen in gold in the middle of the Mexican flag of three bars, green, white and red. The Aztecs set out towards their promised land traveling south. They traveled for many years suffering all kinds of hardships. They traveled across deserts, thru swamps, fought beasts and other Indian tribes and even among themselves, until after many long years which seen [sic] their numbers dwindle down to a very few of their original number they arrived to the valley of Mexico. Now at this point it must be brought out that other Indian tribes had made the valley of Mexico their home hundreds of years before the Aztecs came upon the scene. Some of the earliest inhabitants of the valley of Mexico were the Toltecs who developed a great civilization from 500 A.A. [sic] until they were conquered by the Chichimec who adopted their culture. The Toltecs and Chichimecs suffered a decline similar to the Roman empire by the time the Aztecs arrived to the valley of Mexico.
