CHICANO NEWSPAPER by Ernest Rodriguez Our people need greater communication to strangthen our cultural bonds and inspire them to a sense of unity and purpose. We have to utilize the mass media as a means to accomplish this in order to effectively unite and mobilize our people to overcome the social problems which beset La Raza. I believe the most effective, practical, and immediate means is to establish a nation wise newspaper that will reach out to every sizable community of La Raza. In Iowa where I live there is no newspaper aimed at the Spanish speaking reader except Columnas. In Illinois there are quite a few published in the Chicago area but these are not widely circulated outside of the Chicago area and their news content is limited pretty much to the interests and activities of the Mexican people in the Chicago area. We need a newspaper that will bring the Chicano of California, Texas. Michigan, Kansa, Iowa and the rest of the country together by informing them of our problems, our achievements, our leadership and movements underway to make social justice a reality for La Raza rather than a mere hope. There are enough Chicano journalists and student journalists to staff a national paper I envision, and there are many small local newspaperman who might be persuaded to pool their resources, financial as well as professional. to manage, edit, and publish a dynamic and estrident news organ which will generate confidence among our people and energize them to support and participate in
