-15- LETTERS TO THE EDITORS Dear Editors: The Mexican-American community of the Quad-Cities has lately begun to realize the problems we are being affected by. For reasons that is useless to mention now we have been trying to ignore our situation without realizing that we should rely on each other as hermanos. Because we are facing our problems now instead of avoiding them a new organization has been born in our community that has the objective of upgrading our families in every possible way, BY HELPING EACH OTHER, MASO (Mexican-American Self-help Organization). The membership of M.A.S.O. at the present time consists of nine families and we expect to have more. The fees established are two dollars for initiation and one dollar per month. We are low income families confronting every day our language barrier, our stigma of being Mexican-Americans or stereotyped image, we are unskilled laborers with no economic facilities to obtain a marketable education. But then we know it and we have got together to do something about it, o como decimos "La Raza se esta despertando." Chairman Phone 755-6706 Estimado Sr. Rodriguez: Me gustaria escribir un comentario en COLUMNAS con relacion a su articulo en el numero del mes de Abril, "Ni Hablar Somos Mexicanos." como todos sabemos el ser Mexicano no consiste en hablar espanol o en tener la piel "cafe" el pelo negro y demas caracteristicas fisicas a pesar de como Ud. dice las mezclas de nuestros antecesores Europeos, Asiaticos y Africanos. Sino que el ser Mexicano es llevar dentro de nosotros esa cultura que hemos heredado de nuestros abuelos desde el nacimiento de este contiente. Y es de mucho orgullo memcionar a nuestra madre como un simbolo de carino y respeto asi como a nuestros mayores. Y es de mucho orgullo tambien mencionar que nuestra literatura ha sido enriquezida por grandes escritores como Octavio Paz. Pero como es parte de nuestra cultura tambien el respeto a nuestros semejantes no considero que expresiones como "Viva Mexico Hijos de la . . . . . " , deberian ser incluidos en COLUMNAS quemuchos de nuestros hijos y mujeres leen. Recordemos que hay un lugar y tiempo para todo. Columnas, nos da a conocer la rica herencia que es nuestra por ser Mexicanos. Perdemos todo si caemos en la falsas promesas del gringo y su "melting pot".
