NAACP NEWSLETTER, FORT MADISON, IOWA, JULY 25 1963 "Before I'll be a slave, I'll be buried in my grave and go home to see my God" -Medgar Evers Are YOU aware of the fact that the NAACP still advocates practicing Selective Buying at the following stores??? Woolworths Allens Wilkens Rashids (Those connected with the Palms Supper Club) Ahlstrand Electric has taken the application of one of our young men, and we will wait to see about the outcome. This Selective Buying campaign is to be in effect until such time as we get a definite policy statement from the merchants involved. Each collective effort, no matter how small is worthwhile. Did you read the Editorial in the July 9th edition of the Evening Democrat, "Indiviualism and the Negro" ??? It deserves our commendation and a letter has been by the NAACP to that effect. Individual letters should be sent also! All members are urged to write Senators Gross and Hickenlooper to inform them we expect a favorable vote on the President's Civil Legislation. The U.S. Representatives should also be contacted. The Mid-West Wax Paper Company has hired a Negro. This is the 1st time and it was done without any organized pressure. They are to be commended. The Mayor has appointed a Human Rights Commission but as yet no meeting of this group has been called. The fact that the formation of this Commission was a suggestion of the NAACP was ignored in the announcement. Also we notice that none of the Mexican Community were included in the membership as we requested that they be. Will this be a working Committee or simply a group to appease??? The Voter Registration Drive MUST move! Have YOU registered? Transportation will be provided for everyone by the NAACP. Further details will be forthcoming at the next meeting ! Today as never before, we are obligated to practice this right! All members who have been appointed as Committee chairmen are requested to be present at the next meeting. This is important in-as-much-as all committees should be activates, NOW! Since this is not and cannot be an individual effort, all members are asked to come to the meeting a let it be known if they are willing to work. There are openings on committees which must be filled. July 27th there will be a meeting in Des Moines, Iowa with the Governor and other State office-holders. All NAACP members are asked to attend, if it is at all possible. Details will be given at the next meeting. University of Iowa Libraries, Iowa Women's Archives
