Fort Madison Branch OF THE National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Fort Madison, Iowa 52627 NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 4, 1963 I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate the local branch on the excellent work they have been doing during my absence. "Congratulations" to each and everyone of you! This fight for freedom is only the beginning of a long struggle and I look forward to your continued support in our quest for equality for all Americans. My summer experiences renewed my vigor in this fight for freedom. Having met many of our brethren from the south, I naturally share their views. I departed from Fort Madison the latter part of May and I heard a small whisper of a Human Rights Commission. I still hear an echo that members have been appointed, but as usual and for the last hundred years, there has been NO ACTION. Is this another 'hilarious climax to a chain of injustices'? Those promissory notes are no longer valid! I participated in demonstrations during the summer and with the March on Washington, there is no doubt that this was not the climax of our campaign for freedom ...., this is only the beginning! WE SHALL OVERCOME! [actual signature] Joseph Dulin President - NAACP Ft. Madison, Branch The Freedom Fund Picnic which this branch sponsored on the 24th of August was a definite success! We are grateful to ALL those contributors made it so ! We especially wish to recognise people such as Mr. Warren Edwards and Mrs. Agnes Garland whose individual ticket sales were the highest. Mr. Louis Dade and Mr. Orville Woods, without a doubt, deserve special credit for the tremendous job they did with the food. They spent many hours preparing and serving it. Many others spent numerous hours working before and after the event as well as during the Picnic.. Our thanks go, too, to Dr. and Mrs. Harry Harper, Sr. for the use of their facilities! The Educational Committee, with Donald Wilkerson as chairman, has become an active unit in our branch. Several interesting and rewarding sessions have been held. Mathematics and English are our current projects If anyone desires information regarding this, they may contact the chairman. In connection with this committee, thanks must go to Geraldine Carter who contributed valuable experience and time to this effort before she returned to resume teaching in the District of Columbia. There still has been no meeting of the so-called 'Human Rights Commission' which was appointed by the Mayor! Nor has there been any recognition by him of the fact that he was ignored the Mexican members of this community. Improvement of the living conditions in this area ... for all of the citizens should be of prime importance to the governing officials. That problems do exist is a well known fact ..., ignorance of their being is not a legitimate excuse for trying to dismiss consideration of them. NOW... no excuse will suffice!
