Fort Madison Branch OF THE National Association for the Advancement of Colored People NEWSLETTER, IKE SMALLS TROPHY WINNERS -1963, OCTOBER 17, 1963 Fort Madison Iowa 52627 The remarkable spirit and cooperative effort of ALL local branch members, resulted in our being awarded the coveted Ike Smalls trophy. Presented each year, at the Iowa State Conference of Branches, it is given to that branch with the Board feels have made the most progress during the past year. This year, according to Mrs. Georgine Morris, the reports were better than they have ever been in the history of the Iowa State Conference. To have received it, was certainly an honor. At the same time, it should also serve as a reminder that there is much more work for all of us to do. Every Iowa branch is working harder than ever in this drive for civil rights, and since we would like to bring the 'traveling' trophy home, again , next year, we cannot afford to 'let down'. Presently the trophy is being displayed in window of the Parisian and will remain there through Monday, October 21st. Members of the Fort Madison Branch of the NAACP wish to welcome Reverend and Mrs. Harold Davis and their family to our community. The new Pastor of the Second Baptist Church was formerly President of the Davenport, Iowa Branch of the NAACP Our Youth Council members spent many hours before the Iowa State Conference preparing signs for the March which was held in Burlington on October 5th! We have a youth group of which we can be very proud and they deserve our encouragement and support. For the FIRST time, a Negro male has been employed by the Shaeffer Pen Company to do regular factory work. Mr. Dulin, our president, has received a letter from Mrs. Florence Horn, owner of the Smartway Department Store, stating she has no interest in the Palms Supper Club. Her store has since been removed from the selective buying list. A negro, teenage girl started working at the Shoppers Bazaar, this past Monday night. This is another 'first'! Our SELECTIVE BUYING campaign is still in effect !!! The following stores are on our list : Allens Woolworths Fuller Brush Company The Palms Rashid Rexall Drugs We are aware of the fact that there are members of the NAACP, Negroes, and whites who are sympathetic to our cause who do not wish to participate in the selective buying campaign. This certainly is a matter of individual choice ! We are fighting for the right to move in all areas of life in America as individuals, therefore, University of Iowa Libraries, Iowa Women's Archives
