Fort Madison, Branch OF THE National Association for the Advancement of Colored People NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 14, 1965 Fort Madison, Iowa 52627 REGULAR BRANCH MEETING SUNDAY - OCTOBER 17, 1965 5:30 PM CITY HALL IMPORTANT! 8th Street - between Avenues E & F This meeting will mark the beginning of a new era in the Fort Madison, Branch, of the NAACP, and on our shoulders will lie the responsibility of being able to meet the challenge which it brings! There can be no compromise with reality...even though it sometimes seems much easier to ignore. No amount of legislation will guarantee full rights of citizenship and equality of opportunity to all men, regardless of race, color, creed or national origin, unless there is full implementation of the law. It will call for a new awareness on our part as well as a concerted effort to reach the masses of all minority groups so that we will be ready when opportunity is there...to take advantage of it to the fullest extent! Criticism of what is being done and how...can be put to a much better use by active participation. There is a role for everyone...and the choice belongs to each of us. As human beings, each of us has a personal commitment where the rights of man are concerned! November 7th is tentatively set as the 'kick-off' date for the fall renewal and new member campaign. Plans are being made by the Membership Committee and will be public upon completion. The recipient of the 1965 Ike Smalls Trophy was the Blackhawk County, Branch, whose members have worked very hard to successfully overcome tremendous odds. Their accomplishments are undeniably worthy of every recognition, for there can be no doubt about the fact that in the Waterloo area, the NAACP definitely has a new image...one which could be achieved only by hard work. Our congratulations to Blackhawk County. The site of the 1966 Iowa State Conference of Branches Convention will be Fort Madison. With hard work and careful planning, it is our intention to make this first State meeting of the NAACP in Fort Madison, one of the most memorable sessions which has taken place.
