Fort Madison Branch OF THE National Association for the Advancement of Colored People NEWSLETTER IKE SMALLS TROPHY WINNER OP '63 MAY 7, 1964 Fort Madison, Iowa 52627 Looking back on the 1964 Region 4 Leadership Conference, I am very much ashamed of the facts that I, as an individual, have not done more in the 'fight for freedom'. I am only too much aware that there is too much more each of us can do! The Wisconsin primary in which George Wallace, segregationist Governor, polled 25% of the votes cast, has added much steam to the anti-civil rights forces. We need support NOW, and one way in which everyone can help, is by writing your Senators TODAY, letting them know you support passage of the bill on Civil Rights. Senator Hickenlooper states that his mail is running high against the bill, and Senator Miller states his mail is about even for and against. Write your Senator, today, reassuring him of your support. Send letters to: Senator Jack Miller Senator Bourke: Hickenlooper Senate Office Building Washington, 25, D.C. 20510 A telegram may be sent to the Senators for less than $1.00 apiece. You may call Weston Union and they will add the charges to your phone bill. Messages by telegram are really ‘Attention – getters’ in Washington. Medgar Evers, four girls and Birmingham, Bill Moore, John F. Kennedy and many other good Americans have given their lives because of their belief in human decency. Each of us should ask ourselves… ‘What am I doing to help the cause?’ There are many ways in which one can give support! Joining the NAACP is but one! (All contributions, including the membership fee, are deductible.) Another way to help combat discrimination is to spend your money only in those business places where you can be hired and served without regards to race, color or creed. Help those who help you! It is only fair that we support those businesses who practice equal treatment of all. Our selective buying list will continue, but from now on it will be broader in scope and we ask each of you to support the campaign and spread the word to your friends and neighbors. This is the time when we must band together to make our selective buying effective. Sacrifices must be made and many times it requires our going several blocks or miles out of our way. This can and is being done throughout the nation. Don’t buy those products manufactured by a company whose policy is discriminatory. Mrs. Medgar Evers and her children are without a father,…because he dared support a cause in which he believed. Supporting selective buying campaigns is such a small contribution…by comparison,…but, it IS a contribution! [actual signature] Joseph Dulin Delegates and members of the Fort Madison, Branch and Youth Council, attending the Annual Region 4 Conference of Branches were afforded an excellent opportunity to obtain information which should be invaluable in carrying out the program of the local branch. The dedication of the National and Regionalist Staff members could not fail to impart an inspiration to those whom they addressed. The zeal which members of this branch have displayed, previously, should be reinforced by the program from the regional conference! JOIN THE FIGHT FOR FREEDOM! JOIN THE NAACP,…TODAY!
