The attack of the Director of the FBI on the civil rights movement as being infiltrated by communists was condemned by the Region 4 Conference as being distasteful and odious. It was suggested that letters be written in protest, as the NAACP has opposed the communistic form of government as offering any hope for the attainment of the aspirations of the Negro. All branches were called upon to initiate direct action programs designed to secure a free housing market and to secure passage of legislation on city and state levels that will assure equal access to housing opportunities for all citizens without regard to race or color. Mr. Charles Evers, Field Secretary of Jackson, Mississippi and brother of the slain Medgar Evers, asked the representatives present at the Life Membership Luncheon to urge the members of their respective branches to write letters to the Main Office of Sears and Roebuck, Co. protesting the signs which the White Citizens Council is permitted to display in the store in Jackson, Mississippi. Directly opposing all for which civil rights workers are fighting, the signs must be removed. Failure to do so, could lead to a widespread selective buying campaign being directed towards the Sears and Roebuck Co. Special emphasis is being placed on Voter Registration Programs in the North as well as in the South. No reasonable excuse exists in the northern states for any person of voting age not being registered. Here, there is no need to fear being shot in the back as you approach the registration site. Voting is an act of citizenship! University of Iowa Libraries, Iowa Women's Archives
