-3- FORT MADISON YOUTH COUNCIL NOTES ON REGION 4 CONFERENCE! 'The Key to Success' was the title given to the Youth Guidance Clinic which was held in the Third Baptist Church, in St. Louis, Missouri, during the recent Region 4 Annual Leadership Training Conference. Leonard Carter, Regional Director of Region 4 was present to give the official greeting. A choice of several vocational discussion workshops were available. After hearing from a few dynamic Attorneys, distinguished NAACP officials and being entertained by excellent youth groups from the local churches and schools, the 1600 youths were dismissed to attend their respective workshops. These were led by professional businessmen. A free lunch was provided for those attending at the Coronado Hotel. After their lunch, the youth attended the remaining adult sessions. All of the sessins were interesting and inspiring and made us realize that we must expand our program. "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted: A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;... A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace..." - Ecclesiastes - So, too, it is..., that, NOW is the time for ALL men, whatever their race, color or creed, to stand up and be counted as the struggle for civil rights continues! There cannot and will not be a 'let-up' in the activities of the civil rights groups. In fact, it has been stated that there will be a broadened increase of activity. The time for acceptance of second-class citizenship is gone! Rather, this is the time to demand that there be an end to ALL of the racial inequalities which exist in this country, today. NOW is the time to face facts and realize with unequivocal candor that depriving one man of those rights which are justly his..., in turn, only serves to place the rights of all men in jeopardy. Racial discrimination,...regardless of its form, contradicts the Judeo-Christian teachings of the brotherhood of man, as well as the basic concepts upon which this country was built. Political, Religious and Civil Rights leaders stress the point that all of America has a moral obligation to right a terrible wrong. By the same token, the time has come for this community to rise in support of a cause which is, without a doubt, just! Silence breeds consent...and the time has come for ALL Americans to admit that unless the Negro and his friends in the struggle for civil rights are victorious,...America and ALL of mankind will know defeat! There is, "...a time to every purpose under the heaven:...", and the time for personal commitment to the civil rights movement,...is NOW! Make your contribution to the FIGHT FOR FREEDOM by becoming a part of the growing forces which are involved in the struggle for first-class citizenship for all men! JOIN THE NAACP...TODAY!!! This is the oldest and the largest of all of the civil rights organizations and needs all our support to maintain the legal defense which the present movement has made necessary! Join...today, and,..."...let my land be a land where Liberty Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath, But opportunity is real, and life is free, Equality is in the air we breathe."... -Langston Hughes University of Iowa Libraries, Iowa Women's Archives
