-2- A recent release from the office of the Regional Secretary of Region 4, NAACP, Mr. Leonard Carter, announces the establishing of the new NAACP Special Contribution Fund which was accorded tax exempt status on April 17. 'This fund is to finance legal defense, projects for the elimination of prejudice and discrimination, aid to indigent persons, the promotion of the civic and social welfare of underprivileged persons, the advancement of education and non-partisan analysis, study of research. This covers broadly legal and educational activities of the Association, and could encompass such matters as registration and voting projects, projects designed to eliminate discrimination in employment in housing, and projects of like nature...Size able contributions from persons, corporations or foundations who are anxious to gain tax deductions should now be selected for the "NAACP Special Contribution Fund", 20 West 40th Street, New York, 18, New York,' These contributions will not be credited to the freedom fund. Every member of every NAACP Branch is asked to get ten NEW members to aid in raising the funds which are so vitally needed by the organization. This is quite a challenge! Can we, the members of the Fort Madison, Branch, meet it? How about giving it a try? Equality pins, equality car stickers and NAACP car stickers are available to all members of the local branch. Be proud of your affiliation with the oldest of the civil rights groups. The passage of the civil rights bill, makes voter registration campaigns and committees even more important than before. Help will be needed from the membership to insure competent functioning of our committee. So far the registration has been very effective and we cannot afford to forget that voting is a duty of every citizen. As the eyes of the nation focus on the political conventions, we cannot forget that in the state of Mississippi, the search for the three missing civil rights workers is uncovering more of the atrocities which have been ignored by the citizens of that state. As one listens to the words of the Goldwaters and the Hickenloopers advocating that the implementation of the civil rights laws be left in the hands of the individual states...and one knows that the continued 'dragging ef' the muddy Mississippi rivers will only bare more mutilated bodies... no-one can honestly say that passage of the civil rights law is the 'cure-all'. Until the Negros of Miississippi are guaranteed equal protection under the law... and all people are granted the full rights of citizenship, ... WE CANNOT REST! At the same time, the job which lies before us is not simply one of seeing that the civil rights law is executed to its fullest extent..., but it also involves 'in-group' education as to the responsibilities the minorities, themselves, have in the laws implementation..., the duties which are included in the gaining of full citizenship rights an the implications of 'equal opportunity' for all. None of us can, with a clear conscience, say that 'things' are alright... for they are far from being as they should be, but the time has come for all of us to work as never before to make America the land of opportunity for all. Criticize, if you must, the methods of the different civil rights organizations, but make certain it is constructive and not idle criticism. During it all don't forget the Medgar Evers, Reverend Klunders, the Harry Moores, the Bill Moores and the many mutilated bodies which abound in Mississippi!
