-5- rioting and senseless crime as long as Negroes by the hundreds of thousands are packed into malodorous, rat-plagued ghettos; as long as Negroes remain smothered in poverty in the midst of an affluent society; as long as Negroes are made to feel like exiles in their own land; as long as Negroes continue to be dehumanized; as long as Negroes see their freedom endlessly delayed and diminished by the head winds of tokenism and small handouts from the white power structure. No nation can suffer any greater tragedy than to cause millions of its citizens to feel that they have no stake in their own society." -Martin Luther King, Jr. SALUTE TO DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. The gentle smile has faded away, Those warm brown eyes forever closed. The generous heart that loved so many Is silent now, God's servant is home. Silent now, the voice of promise For his people he would free From all prejudice and hatred... He wanted only equality. He preached freedom for all races, Black and white alike, he loved. He prayed we all could live together In peace, and harmony and love. He asked only what our laws stand for... For equal rights for all humanity. He fought violence with all his being... We cannot do less and remain free. A sniper's bullet felled God's spokesman, But he must not have died in vain. We must go forward in his memory His dream of freedom must live again. As we pay our last respects, today, Let us remember his leading hand. May the Precious Lord take our hand, now, That we may see His promised land. Dr. King, now you're in heaven... Please look down on us and pray. We need courage and understanding So we may join you there, someday. -Delores Rudd written April 4, 1968 Don't forget!!!........JULIAN BOND........May 3, 1969 at 7PM.......Jr. High School Auditorium..........Fort Madison, Iowa University of Iowa Libraries, Iowa Women's Archives
