-3- Mexican folk-lore and were printed annually on the calendars of Mexico until 1872, one hundred and twelve years after his death. The first World War in history was started by Araha, Negro emperor and ex-slave, when he attacked Mecca, Arabia, in 569 A. D. This war lasted for more than a thousand years and stretched from France to beyond China. It later brought about the fall, of several great empires, one of them the Later Roman Empire, capital of Constantinople, in 1453 A.D. The Burlington, Branch, of the NAACP will hold their annual "Around the World" festival on Sunday, April 21st in the American Legion Room of the Burlington Memorial Auditorium, from 4 to 7PM. If you have a conscience,...you must weep...and wonder just what is happening to this land of ours. The shock is even greater than when you hear of white housewives who jumped up and applauded, happily, when they heard of Dr. King's death. The feeling grows even worse when you hear of the terribly insensitive and cruel remarks which were made, here,...in our town,...in our county,...and our state! Indeed, one is frightened when you realize that these are people who you talk to ...and pass on the street,...and go to church with. Maybe even more horrifying, is the realization that there are so many 'good' people who choose to be silent and let the voices of the 'very sick', be heard. Even though history shows us that America has violence as a great part of its past,...it never ceases to amaze one that, these things could still happen, here, in our country,...today! (Yet, we know they still find mutilated Negro bodies in the South...stories that never reach the white press.) There is a greater challenge facing us, today, than ever before, and we cannot afford to get lost in the pettiness of personal grievances. All of the civil rights legislation in the world is going to be lost, if there is not a change in the hearts and minds of men, regardless of their race, color, creed or national origin. All of us have much soul-searching to do...and the time is NOW..., for tomorrow may be too late. None of the warnings of the civil rights leaders, (those who believed in non-violence), have been heeded by the law making and enforcing agencies of this country and its states. They forecasted violence, years ago, if conditions were not corrected int he ghettos of this country. While they expressed concern for the future,...news focused on the extremists,...who, although they were loud enough,...had very few followers. Their programs were more startling...so the rationality of getting to the root of the problem of racism in this country was and is still being ignored. Violence int he ghetto will accomplish little,...and violence to end violence, will only beget violence. The day for 'straddling the fence is indeed over,...and it is up to all of us...black, white, red, yellow, brown or whatever, to face the facts. We are ALL America,... just as we are whatever America is to be, and, somehow, someway, we must find a way to reach the hearts of men, for it is there that the real problem lies. The Negro who sits back, proudly, is pitiful in his apathy and complacency and is just as guilty of nurturing the disease that is 'eating our society', as is the white liberal who speaks only in private of his concern for the injustices of the American way of life, ( if he even bothers to speak at all). Love of ones fellow man is basic of Judeo-Christian principles and is not lost on the human frailties which breed hypocrisy. There must be an ecumencial spirit among men...for our solutions to the problems which are plaguing all of us, today. Dr. King has won his battle,...and he is free, really free, at last. There are many who stand ready to meet the challenge that bigotry presents, determined to see that his death and that of the others, is not in vain. We who are committed, are prepared to face the demands to be met if we are ever to make America the land it was meant to be! Somehow, it will be done! Where do YOU stand? "Our goal is not to defeat or humiliate the white man, but to win his friendship and love." -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. University of Iowa Libraries, Iowa Women's Archives
