-3- From time to time we have printed definitions of the term 'Black Power'..., in the hope of eventually getting across the fact that it must and can have a vital and effective meaning. The term is here to stay, for it has caught the fancy of every youth group of every civil rights organization int he country. We can either make it a powerful working force which will help us in the achievement of our goals,...or we can try to pretend it does not exist...and take a step backward in the fight for the rights of human beings. It is up tp those of us who believe in non-violent militancy to give the term a meaning which all of the world can see adds up to constructive and productive organizational processes which will work to benefit all America. White power has almost always meant oppression and violence,...this is the real reason why so many people object to the use of the term black power. However, it should be a credit to all of those associated with the movement if, by black power, we mean to salvage America for all its citizens by non-violent utilization of every means available to attain freedom for all man in America. The 59th Annual convention of the National Association For The Advancement of Colored People will be held in Atlantic City, new Jersey, June 24 - 29, 1968. At the last meeting of the local Branch, which was held on April 21st, the Fort Madison Branch went on record as being in favor of the adoption of an Open Housing Ordinance by the Fort Madison City Council. This was also to have been a matter of public statement. "If we are arrested every day, if we are exploited every day, if we are trampled over every day, don't ever let anyone pull you so low as to hate them. We must use the weapon of love. We must have compassion and understanding for those who hate us. We must realize so many people are taught to hate us that they are not totally responsible for their hate. But we stand in life at midnight; we are always on the threshold of a new dawn." -Martin Luther King, Jr. The Youth Council met with the superintendent of Schools, Mr. Arthur Hansen and the Assistant Superintendent, Mr. William Slicker regarding the acquisition of more multi-ethnic texts in the local school system. They were shown some good books which are already in use, but the History book still exclude the Negro in the history of America. The meeting was considered to have been worthwhile by all who attended. The Home Visit Program is still on! Have you taken part in one?...Would you like to?
