-3- Nebraska became the 25th state in the nation to pass an open housing law which bars discrimination based on race, color, religion or national origin in sales and rentals, financing, advertising and membership in broker's organization or multiple listing services. Two Minneapolis, Minnesota chapters of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles formally disavowed their national organization's whites-only membership policy just before a city council committee adopted a policy to limit issuance of liquor licenses to organizations practicing membership bias. James A. Smith, principal Carver High School in Dothan, Alabama, will become the first Black president of the 41, 000 member Alabama Education Association. The two highest ranking military officers assigned to desk jobs in the Pentagon, are two Black Brigadier Generals. This is the first time a general has been assigned to such tasks. The men are : Air Force General Daniel James and Army General Frederic E. Davison. Nearly 1,500 black people hold elective office in the United States,…the largest number in the nation’s history. Of that total, there are 48 Black mayors of cities. Black elected officials make up only .3 of 1% of the more than 500,000 U.S. elected officials, though about 10% of the voting age population is Black. It is a sad commentary, indeed, on life in these United States, when with all of the existing problems which are due to attitudes, the President and his Vice President makes speeches which are so inflammatory, they can only serve to further divide the country. It seems to me that the case of justice is not served very well, when men are being tried and convicted because of charges that they have crossed state lines and incited riots. Men like Lester Maddox and Spiro Agnew are doing no less,…in fact, they are doing more. Yet, because of position, they will be permitted to continue without fear of repercussions. There are many troubled days ahead,…and at this point in history, there is no turning back. It is very important that the existing problems be faced and solved,…we certainly do not need new ones…and, this is what we are getting. “There are two kinds of discontent in this world; the discontent that works, and the discontent that wrings its hands. The first gets what it wants, and the second loses what it has. There’s no cure for the first but success; and there’s no cure at all for the second.” Gordon D. Graham “We must have respect for just laws, and we do need social order for the common good. But, with all the concern about violence in the streets, we must not overlook something even more serious - that violence inherent in our social system, a violence that is part of our history, built into our social, economic, political, and even religious systems. This systemic violence has for hundreds of years destroyed family life, human dignity and self respect, and has prevented the exercise of political, economic, and social rights. This violence stretches from the unjust treatment of Indians in the earliest days of our nation through more than 250 years of the most vicious slavery known to recorded history, down to today’s racial injustice and disregard for the poor.” - from one of Bishop Gerald O’Keefe’s letters to the Diocese of Davenport RENEW your MEMBERSHIP…Lets join and work earnestly, in a constructive manner, to improve conditions, so that all men will be able to enjoy the fruits of being Americans!
