Fort Madison, Branch OF THE National Association for the Advancement of Colored People NEWSLETTER MAY 18, 1967 Fort Madison, Iowa 52627 MEMBERSHIP MEETING! Sunday - MAY 21, 1967 5:30 PM CITY HALL Come and bring a friend! It is extremely URGENT that every member and person who is interested in the rights of man and the ultimate preservation of the American 'ideal' write to the Congressmen who are their representatives in the legislatures of both the State and Federal government regarding civil rights legislation. Reports in the paper show that in both Des Moines and Washington, there is much work being done to KILL any possible civil rights legislation. Here, in Iowan there was much said about the fact that the Iowa Legislature passed a Fair Housing Bill. True, they did! However, as was expected, there had to be an attachment to the bill in order to keep it from being used too freely by those who might be discriminated against. The statement has been made that the attachment was made to make certain that there was no frivolous use of the bill. This is just an excuse,...because if you know what discrimination is..., it is highly unlikely that you will unjustly abuse another! Now that it has been determined that persons who might charge that there has been discrimination in the area of housing will not need to dip into their own pockets for the needed $500.00, the Iowa legislature would like to kill the bill. (It is a well-known fact that the majority of Iowa Negroes or other minority group members would find it extremely hard to come up with $500.00 in order to institute legal action.) To say that there was any other reason for the attachment is being hypocritical. On the Federal level, Congressmen have been quoted as saying the actions of the civil rights leaders and workers are cause enought for them not to pass any further legislation. There is no reason for denying a human being those rights which are already his by virtue of the fact that he is an American citizen. WRITE TODAY! To Iowa Legislators...requesting adequate funds for the State Human Rights Commission and preservation of the Fair Housing Bill To Federal Legislators... requesting passage of the 1967 Civil Rights Bill. After all, it is our RESPONSIBILITY to let those who represent US know how we feel about all of the issues which come before them. "...It is clear that our actual decisions and choices, with regard to the Negro, show us that we are not in fact interested in the rights of several million persons, who are members and citizens of our society and are in every way loyal University of Iowa Libraries, Iowa Women's Archives
