Madison Chapter...NAACP Ft. Madison, Iowa Dear Dr. Harper, This is just a brief note of thanks I wanted to send before getting bogged down in a morass of work here at the United Nations, and too, before I set sail again this weekend for Toledo, Ohio and Detroit, Michigan. First let me thank you and all the Harpers for the hospitality of your home. Although my visit was all too brief, I certainly felt at home during the short time there. I only hope there will come an opportunity in the near future to reciprocate. I also want to broadly thank the members of the Fort Madison Branch, Mr. Beacham, Mrs. Lewis, Mr. Woods, Mrs. Krieger, Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Malcom, Mr. Marshall and all those who had anything at all to do with making my visit to Fort Madison so pleasant. I really hated to leave for the Airport and had it not been for the tight schedule here with the possibility of two Security Council meetings being called this week, the General Assembly in Session, and today's visit of the King and Queen of Nepal, I would have stayed over and left early this morning for connections in Chicago. I shall not soon forget the warm friendship and reception accorded me yesterday afternoon...a total stranger in the town for the first time and yet I felt as though I had been to Fort Madison many times. I sent a note to Mr. Keenan of Shaeffers and to Mayor Tibbets for their gifts. When my wife opened the Shaeffer package this morning, it was really a beautiful thing and I shall make good use of it. I wish the Branch Godspeed in what it is trying to do. If each of us take a small measure of responsibility in removing the barriers, in eliminating the accumulated "wastes of frustration and despondency" in our own communities, in another decade we will as my late friend Mr. Rickey said..."look back and wonder what the issues were all about." Again, my sincere thanks to all of you for one of the best enjoyable visits of all the 163 cities I've been to these past five years. Sincerely yours, [actual signature] Malvin R.
