24 SPACEWAYS IF I WEREWOLF (continued from page 5) "I guess these frog tympani—" "tympanums," I corrected, "-- don't receive sounds exactly like human ears; it's just noise to me." "Besides," Chauvenet was saying thru the parrot's head he'd molded, the better to speak, on his eagle body, "if you do find some disadvantages about the particular animal form you may take, you can change back to your usual body at will." "Sure," purred Widner, "and it gets to be easier the more you do it. Watch." And he flowed into his familiar human shape in a matter of seconds. Fortunately this shape included the clothes he'd had on when he last held it, so la Kuslan was not scandalized. As the discussion went on, he sat down on the bed on the other side of Rothman from me, next to the radio. The Gilbert and Sullivan piece had ended, and as tho to welcome him, the radio broke out with a boogie-woogie piece; I knew Widner loved boogie-woogie. Were-Widner apparently didn't however, for he immediately switched it off. "Well," Milt was saying, "I might have been happier going on with things the way I'd planned, but having had this opportunity presented to me, I couldn't ever be satisfied again, if I passed it up, so—" he rose and reached toward the Cwael Darth, which Chauvenet extended in one claw. Thru a fog, the thought came to me again: "Were-Widner apparently didn't however, for he immediately switched it off." "M-Milt!" I stuttered, "aa-eh-uh—ffor Smith' sake, Milton, don't! Wait!" To Be Continued by Bob Tucker. SO YOU WANT TO RECORD? ( continued from page 17) turntable When the screws are tightened the head will be slightly biased or turned in its line of travel. This bias will cause the stylus to turn its face more toward the center pin. Thus the thread will come from the inside and be out of the way. This angle should in no case ever exceed five degrees. Please note that the cutting angle still must be the true vertical. It is still necessary to brush the thread from the record to keep it out of the way. In the last article I suggested you buy a small bruth [sic "brush"] for this purpose. Since then, however, there has come out on the market a "chip chaser" made by Audio Devices Inc. This has a heavy base and is set alongside the turntable. There is a wiper blade which rests on the disc. This infallibly brushes the thread toward the center. This leaves the recordist with his hands free and his mind free from this trouble of thread tangle. I suggest this be used instead of the brush. However, the latter can be used if preferred. Now you know all about your recorder and how to adjust and handle it for various results. In the next of this series I shall dlscuss various recording phases—recording from your radio; microphone technique; music and speech recordings; and so on. If, in reading this, it seems I have been obscure or something, write me in care of S̲p̲a̲c̲e̲w̲a̲y̲s̲ and I shall answer all of you in a forthcoming article.
