6 CHAIN LETTER DEPT FOR SERVICE FANS ONLY (Foreward: on August 16, 1942, we began a chain letter for fans in service, only. We, naturally, wrote the first letter, and away it went. The results were returned to us December 22nd.... a record of some sort. Chain letters seldom travel so fast. Here it is, in full: ) #1 (Tucker) Cheerio Gang: Aug 16 Here goes what I believe to be the only all-Forces chain letter---with the exception of myself as originator. A chain letter came thru here yesterday containing some debate on the desirability of having a large number of such chain letters circulating around. I saw no reason why there shouldn't be. A lot of fans I know would rather receive a chain than a single missive from a correspondent. At the same time (in this chain I am speaking of), I suggested that future chains include more and more fans in service---and then said to myself: "Why not start one?" So, here 'tis. I expect this chain to cost you nothing, gain you much in the way of amusement, a few minutes reading, or something worthwhile. I do not know about postage regulations of course, but I imagine that no matter how bulky the letter becomes, you-all may still send it free. I'm enclosing a list of fans in Service as of this date. You will notice that I have placed numbers beside certain names. Please send this chain to those so numbered, in that order given. That is, Bob Madle is #1, Motz is #2, tiger is #3 and so on. Not every person on the list is to get this chain, for several reasons. ((Note: the list in mention was a copy of the Fanzine Service for Fans in Services, put out by Harry Warner and myself in August for fan editors. --BT )) (1): I don't believe it should go outside the U.S. because of the time factor involved, as well as the risk of never seeing it again. (2): I don't believe some fans would be interested in it, judging by the great lack of correspondence they haven't kept up with fans at home. And (3): I know some of the addresses in the list to be unreliable. Ed Connor's, for instance-- he isn't at Scott Field now, but I don't know just where he is. I'll include him in the next. Will the last man --#13-- please return it to me? I'll try to assemble the letters for printing, either in LeZ or elsewhere, but this is not a promise. Write nothing you dont want printed. As to news: I expect to leave tomorrow (17th) for a ten day vacation in New York; hope to see Tiger while there. It has been widely rumored about that Ackerman is drafted, but rumor is false. (( Now is the time to shout- 'oh yeah?' --BT )) Joe Gilbert is in the Merchnt Marine, training somewhere in Florida. Harry Jenkins seems to have lost interest since he left, and the Columbia Camp pubs are noticed by their absence. Including that oh-so-important Fannual the NFFF was to get out. Well, I'll shove this off. Please ship along to the next guy in line--the jerk holding the number following yours. -Bob Tucker (letter #2 on next page)
