9 I've had few fan contacts since I came off that Navy Transport in May of this year, but would welcome some. Address Room 10,Barge Office, New York City; phone WHitehall 4-0900, Ext. 14. In about a wk my home address will be 2182 Barnes ave, Bronx, N.Y. As a "professional sailor" with nearly three years' service, I am overwhelmed by the attention and courtesy a uniform attracts nowadays. Let me tell you, tho, that if you want to see real United Nations hospitality, go to Capetown, South Africa. (( Yes gang--just get up some day and buzz down there for lunch. But chum---didn't you reveal something there? We remember getting a letter from you once. . . . . -BT )) I received one consignment from the "Fanzine Service for Fans in Service" (clever name, that), and enjoyed the magazines immensely. That Chinese girl on the back of VoM --- isn't she sump 'in? (( YES! -BT)) I'm tickled pink that fans are adjusting to life in the service, and that peachy civilians like Tucker make an effort to keep up communications. (( We blush a peachy hue -BT )) The brotherhood of fandom is inexplicable, but is forcibly demonstrated by this series of letters, for instance. Anyone wanta send me that Dixie fan-mag, The Southern Star, I think it's called? I'll close, hoping for more chains of letters, and still others, "person to person". (U. S. Coast Guard) -George Tullis #6 (Bridges) Dear fans and dopes, October 10 At the rate it's traveling now, this letter is going to get back to Tucker sometime around the middle of next year. My excuse -- is that the letter had to spend too much time following me around the countryside. For the benefit of anyone who may be interested, my address is up in the corner. (( You mean it was up there. Remember our little feathered friend, the censor? -BT)) I'll admit I did delay a couple of days in answering the letter, but 'twas solely in the interest of fandom. I had reason to believe Lt. Brazier, who is now second in line to receive this, was stationed at another field nearby, and I've been trying to get in touch with him--so far without success. Like Tullis I see no sense in writing something in illegible longhand when an army Underwood is available. It is Saturday nite and most of the boys have gone to town to get drunk as their habit , thus leaving me all alone in the company orderly room. As you can see , I don't goto town on Saturday nite to get drunk, I stay in camp and writer part of a fan chain letter. (( Sissy! -BT)) Friday is the night I go to town and get . . . (( Spoke too soon, didn't we? -BT)) All the fans seem to like the army. I do too. Where else is it possible to get up a couple of hours before dawn to be entertained by a tune on a bugle? So Carl Motz is a bugler now? And I thought all fans were nice people. I am somewhat peeved at Tucker, why can't he seem to realize that I became a Corporal over four months ago? Harry Warner's lists never show me as a private. ((Hi, Corporal! -BT )) (shift, men)
