11 Lynn Bridges has two letters in this chain: his original contribution written a month earlier than his second, which is addressed to me. I enclose it to explain, documentarily, why John L. Chapman, #5 in the list, has been skipped. Also, apart from that, you might enjoy reading it, and perhaps taking issue with his second paragraph. As you can see, I'm taking issue with it, for here's my letter! If mine comes back from Dale Hart, I'll do the same thing Lynn did and mail it to Douglas Blakely. Funny thing about these chain letters ... you go along never knowing if some old correspondent is here or gone, and bang! his name pops up in a chain letter. Doug, remember way back to that Junior Science Fiction Correspondence Club of Minneapolis? I wrote to you first, and you gave me Oliver Saari's name to write to. We had some real discussions; that is, until he proved that an invisible man could not see. And Dale Hart ... I wrote him one letter, never got an answer, and so concluded-- "so what?" Dale, you wrote some fine things in Doc Lowndes' publications. I reprinted one, "Messenger", in my old Frontier. Mulrain, let's start up again, whatdya say? And lookie here, the old man of the mountain, George Tullis! Those bullets must bounce off that copy of Dunsany you carry around in your pants, or whatever they call them in the !@[[cent symbol]]543! Navy's little sister.... And Tiger, the man at the Chicon who had such a hard time convincing me that he was really the Hy Tiger from New York! Yes, they do pop up. You know, some day I'm going to write a letter to this guy--- Bob Tucker. Do any of you fellows know him? (( No. I'm the original model for The Shadow ... with cloak. -BT )) (( And here, friends (also Brazier), the awful thing happened! The Brazier letter burned to the very foundations! It was typed on the flimsy onion-skin kind of paper---and we had it propped against an ash tray, coping directly onto stencil. Well, to make a long letter short-- very short-- a cigaret did the dirty work! Oh, we weep! our heart-felt apologies to Donn, and to the readers, because the remainder of the missive was every bit as interesting as the above. Alas, we can only weep! How shall we make amends? Will Donn send us another? Please do Donn! BT)) #9 (Hart Dear Fans: no date I will find this letter hard to write; I know I will. Its not that I want to be uncommunicative--it's just that I don't know how to talk to fans anymore. Receiving the letters of Tucker, Madle, Motz, Tiger, Bridges, Tull;is, and Brazier was certainly the well-known pleasant surprise. Some of the other fellows reported that they were delayed a little. Now, I'm a little late too ... but let me explain: The chain was sent to this Base, held for some time, then mistakenly hustled off to my old address, PO Box 566, Highlands, Texas. My mother saved the day by just as promptly hustling the series back here, to be met by my open arms --- and eyes. I wish that I could ramble a little on subjects scientifictional, but I can't, for the very good reason that I have almost lost touch. I buy a lot of the pro mags but read about one story in six. And as for fan mags, all of them that I've read since becoming a Navy man can be counted on the fingers of my left hand. It is a sad thing. (over)
