b 14 I've just returned from the North African campaign, and many and varied were my adventures while on that continent. I was in front-line fighting with boys from Iowa, South Carolina and Penna. Made some grand pals too. Too bad I had to return as soon as my work was finished --- well, maybe it wasn't too bad at that, as it was wonderful to get back home again after four months. Previous to that little trip I had been to Iceland and as far as Murmansk. But all those anecdotes are being saved until some future date." -Ted Carnell (London) WITHOUT COMMENT WE GIVE YOUSE: "Received copy of November LeZ. I noted however a drastic mistake in my name listing. It is John M. Cunningham, not John R. Cunningham as you have it listed. In the future please make this correction. Otherwise LeZ was excellent and very enjoyable. A real sparkle of entertainment in a lonly soldier's life." - John A BRACE OF ITEMS FROM A SERGEANT: "Among other fantasies we may as well lay while we are at it is the Goldstone and the Devil saga. This first saw the light of day in that schizophrenic Jerquel letter in VoM about halloween time. if you recall Yokel proclaimed Tigrina and Goldstone to be among the true believers. I've met Tigrina, and she is disappointingly normal. The Goldstone business was cooked up by Lou and myself over a handful of kurt bieren. Joe couldn't handle the alcohol , but the story lingered in his skull and was eventually passed on to be gospel. So far, I've not been able to see any of the Auusie fans. I am nowhere near the one city where any activity remains. However, I have been writing to Eric F. Russell for some time now. Seems to be a pretty good Joe." - Sgt. Nick Kenealy AND DITTO FROM A CORPORAL: "LeZ filtered thru the chaotic channels of army communication and finally reached me here, altho my new post isn't far from Fort Baker. For which I holler a loud and hearty thanks, chum. LeZ keeps hammering home the impossible thought that there are still civilians left. Glancing over the War Dept I note that Don Wandrei is an infantry private, which is the paradox of the age, and if you know Wandrei you can see what I mean. He's a gentleman, a scholar, a philosopher , and a brilliant conversationalist. In appearance he somewhat resemble s a poet. But an infrantly private, never. It's eldritch. It's uncanny . But it isn't Wandrei." - Cpl Douglas Blakely LeZ sez: We know next to nothing about that item as listed in War Dept in times past. We don't even remember who supplied it. Some member of the Minneapolis pack of hoodlums, probably. But it is gone now, because we aren't keeping up with authors. - BT A QUICKIE: Pvt Dick Wilson informs that it is now. Lt. Dave Kyle, of a Florida bombing squadron. It took a war to do it, but at least a fan is in the air without sprouting wings of his own!
