in Pantoja. Life seemed truly blessed for 21 year old Maria and 22 year old Leno. If only the restlessness of the yet to be satisfied sector of the Mexican society would cooperate. Plutarco Elias Calles had now assumed the presidency. Due to the direction of the 1917 Constitution, parcels of land were taken from the hacendados and redistributed to the small farmers. Sizable tracts of land, including some foreign owned properties in the irrigated districts of the northwest, were expropriated and distributed. This policy had enemies in several camps. Mexico's large landowner, whose land was taken over. The urban rich, who wanted the government to invest in services for them and American investors in industry, who wanted similar services and plenty of cheap, docile, urban labor. At the same time, food production relative to population growth was failing. Unrest in rural areas attendant to land reform hindered production and led to riots in Mexican cities and towns. Once again, Zeferino and Leno discussed the necessity to flee Mexico. This time with the intention of making their home in the States. Therefore, in March of 1926, Maria three months pregnant with their third child, said goodby to her husband as he returned North to search out a place where he could settle with his family. During Leno's absence, Maria's mother became ill from tumors and died. With death, however, there was also birth. In August of 1926, Maria delivered twin boys. Within a month of each other, one died of the colic and the other of pneumonia. The cemetery of San Jose in Pantoja registered them as Jesus Francisco and Jose Zeferino Cano. Because of her despair and heartache. Zeferino sent for Leno to return to Botija as soon as possible. The summons simply stated for him to return regardless of his situation and take his family from Botija to whatever fate the States would offer to them. Within a short time, Maria, Elena Juliana, Maria Guadalupe, and Leno said their goodbyes to family and boarded the train for San Antonio, Texas. A small figure of a man, hunched as if the sky itself was resting on his shoulders, was watching the departure, nodding his head with approval as the train slowly pulled out of the train station leaving him engulfed in a large cloud of steam. "Leno, do you know that old man nodding to us? Over there, you can barely see him hidden in the cloud of steam." "Where, Maria? There is no one there." answered Leno. "All the excitement has you imagining things." 28.,
