1968. HONORED. Mrs. Mary Cano, 65 of 940 Webster Street, has been named "Employee of The Year" by Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Mrs. Cano a seamstress in the hospital's laundry department, was cited for a decade of "devoted and meritorious service." The mother of 11, Mrs. Cano is a native of Mexico. The annual award includes a $25 savings. bond. Currently, Leno and Maria reside at 940 Webster enjoying retirement and the fruits of their labors. The integration of Leno, Maria, and their nine children into the American society was not always a pleasant one. It rarely is a smooth transition. No doubt, each member of the Cano family carries within themselves their personal scars as well as their personal victories from it but they cannot but feel very special in having been chosen to share in the dreams of Zeferino, Jesusa, Prudenciano, Rita, Leno and Maria. "...they will be extensions of ourselves. To see Elena write her own name. To hear Maria Guadalupe read a book. The things that we have gone through; that we will go through is such a little price to pay..." [Group photo of the Cano family at a Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary celebration] 46.
