Later - 22:30 o'clock. In the interval that I have been away at work and dinner Madame has substituted a pretty little vase for the drinking glass I had holding the daisies. The improvement is marked. I'm looking for your eyes to smile at the daisies, but they don't. The "where did I put those peanuts" expression continues. For a few hours a I have been hopping. The war began again last night. The Germans hit our troops in numerous places, reports of which came pouring in this evening. We came off with credit but not, of course, without paying something for our success. Among the heroes who paid
