honoring dead heroes went for nothing; I had to be a live and lively martyr myself. I was left alone in charge of the office. Then everything broke loose and I spent the day studying maps, hanging on the telephone and dispatching motor cars. Today has been more of the same except that I have not had to handle it all alone. The Hun goes marching on. Believe me it's no fun watching that red line on the map move southward. It's awful to think of the beautiful country that is being laid waste by the battle and of the thousands who are dying and the thousands more who are being made homeless.
