group of the whole nation is like them I don't see any sense to this German propaganda about our having to fight the Japs. I'd much rather be friends with them than some people I know of who are not now listed among our enemies. We talked quite freely about the Japanese expedition to Siberia. Our guests were extremely modest about it. They wouldn't admit that they expected it to play an important part in the war, but they seemed sincere in hoping that it might help. They are going up to the front tomorrow to have a look-see at trench warfare. I am going to enclose for you to read two letters that have come to me from Madame and Madamoiselle Plocque in reply to the note of thanks I wrote them after
