144 19 August, 1918 Dearest Beloved, -- Despite the alerte and the danger of avions I am in my little chamber tonight where I can be with you, and nobody else. I just told Charlie Mangan and Sergeant Beakey that I was going home to see my wife, smiling an ironical smile the while I said it.
